Most properties with off street parking or a garage can have an electric vehicle charger installed, provided there is adequate electrical capacity at the main fuse and spare capacity in the consumer unit.
How long does the installation take on the day?
A standard installation typically takes half a day, depending on the distance between the consumer unit and the charger location and how the cable travels through the building.
Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?
Not always. If your current fuse board has a spare way and modern safety devices, the new circuit can be connected directly. If it is full or outdated, an auxiliary enclosure or replacement fuse board may be required.
What happens if the cable run is longer than 10 metres?
The starting price includes up to 10 metres of cable from your consumer unit. If your charger is further away, additional metres are measured and charged on top of the starting rate.
Can I charge from a normal 3 pin socket instead?
A standard 13 amp socket can provide occasional slow charging, but it is not intended for continuous heavy loads over many hours. A dedicated charging point is faster and designed for sustained operation.
